STAFF RESEARCH

I. Middle class children. Family's social status vs. the problem of school auto-selection /Assoc. Prof. APS, Barbara Smolińska-Theiss/
The core idea of the project is that educational biography of children in Polish conditions is determined by family's social status rather than intellectual and cultural competence.
The research focuses on questions such as: how students of exclusive Warsaw high schools define, and how they identify with, their social status; which status factors they use in shaping their educational biography; what kind of family resources they reach for; to what degree educational plans copy and strengthen family's social status, thus leading to reproduction of social structure.
It is a long-term project. The research was conducted in year 2000 and 2005 in top Warsaw high schools ( Cervantes High School, High School affiliated with the Department of Pedagogy at University of Warsaw, and Alliance of Families High School). It analyzes and attests changes of social structures in new socio-political conditions, as well as modifications in Polish education system.
II. Socially marked parenthood - stigmatization of the families with a disabled child / MA Marta Wiatr
The Project deals with the problem of families with a disabled child and available support. It concentrates on two subject matters: parenthood itself and, on the other hand, experiences which a disabled child's parents encounter during contact with social welfare representatives.
The aim of the research is to attain, attest and analyze various forms of support for such families and its reception by parents. The research is set in comparative perspective - it is intercultural and it refers to three various social systems ( Poland, Germany, USA). The theoretical perspective and methodology applied provide a better understanding of the processes of rendering and receiving the support by both sides. Multicultural perspective of countries with various social traditions is to highlight the experiences involved, i.e. child's disability, adaptation to the received support, stigmatization and normalization..
The research conducted in 2003 - 2006 was financed by the Academy of Special Education, DAAD ( Deutcher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) and Indiana University in Bloomington.
At present, the final, Polish section is being finished, and the data gathered are being analyzed.
III. Socialization of a Chechen child in Polish conditions - between war trauma, refugee experience and adaptation to a foreign cultural environment / MA Edyta Januszewska/
The research undertakes the issue of socialization of Chechen children who arrive to Poland with their families. It focuses on Chechen children's experiences: war trauma, acculturation process, functioning in a new, culturally foreign environment.
The research is carried out in four refugee centres: Central Refugee Reception Unit in Dębak - Podkowa Leśna, Refugee Center in Warsaw, Moszna and Wołomin, as well as in Polish schools. It includes: interviews with refugees and teachers working with Chechen children, participatory observation and analysis of pictures drawn by refugee children. The research is set in multicultural perspective and has a qualitative form.
